Community

We maintain a close relationship of understanding and respect for the values and concerns of the communities in which we operate.

In 2015, the Las Cenizas Mining Group formally established its Community Relations Department, which seeks to establish and maintain long-term relationships of understanding and collaboration based on mutual respect and trust between communities and the company.

Among the collaboration and social and community investment support programs that Las Cenizas Mining Group conducts in Cabildo and Taltal, the following stand out:

  • Competitive funds for community organizations with contributions to community projects that address local needs.
  • Access to employment opportunities and work experience in the mining sector
  • Coordination of internships for students from local technical high schools
  • Collaborative work with relevant economic sectors in the community
  • Productive promotion of the artisanal fishing sector in the Antofagasta region

Mature initiatives

ACUYMIN

ACUYMIN is the first aquaculture laboratory and hatchery in Chile that uses seawater from a mining operation-specifically Las Cenizas Mining Group Taltal-for the production of juvenile sea urchins, oysters, and scallops of commercial, social, and environmental relevance.

This pioneering mining-aquaculture initiative began in October 2017, following the signing of an alliance between Minera Cenizas S.A.; the Catholic University of the North, the Union of Independent Shellfish Divers of Caleta Cifuncho, and the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Antofagasta Region.

Since its launch, the ACUYMIN center has attracted considerable interest from local authorities and the national and international aquaculture sector. Guided tours of the center, academic theses, and invitations to speak at conferences and seminars are proof of this.

Competitive Funds

The first version of the Competitive Fund for Community Development for Social Organizations was implemented in the town of Cabildo in 2015 with the aim of financing specific projects that directly benefit the community.

The community social organizations invited to apply include neighborhood associations, sports clubs, senior citizen clubs, artisan and cultural groups, religious dance groups, APRs, environmental groups, among others with a presence in the commune.

The spirit of this Fund is to support ideas and proposals generated participatively by social organizations that respond to the needs felt by the community itself.

Among the projects to be financed are:

  • Improvement of infrastructure and equipment for grassroots organizations and community development centers.
  • Projects related to the environment, culture, and sports.
